Local Roots. International Branches.
J. Banks Through the Years
Over the subsequent decades, both residential and commercial projects spread throughout the country as well as abroad to Italy, Ireland, Mexico, and the US Virgin Islands. With deep roots in the Lowcountry, our branches reach globally; we understand that each community, project and place is unique to the client and purpose of the space. Today, J. Banks works coast to coast and over the pond, steadfastly inspired by the resort lifestyle. Our designers provide invaluable depth, diversity of experience, expertise, and panache across J. Banks’ varied portfolio.
We continue to pull strength from experience and inspiration from the ever-changing industry.
In 1986, Joni Burden (then Joni Banks) bought the Hilton Head Island company Decorators Unlimited with the help of a group of investors, then called The Melrose Group. This company became J. Banks Design. Burden describes J. Banks’ first commercial project, the Melrose Resort on Daufuskie Island, as “the dog that caught the car.” It was this first challenging and story-like project on a bridgeless island that formed J. Banks’ problem-solving approach to luxury design.
